Matt Syme

Matt is currently the Principal of Port Lincoln Special School, a small school on the outskirts of Port Lincoln nearly 700kms from the Adelaide CBD. Matt has recently joined the South Australian Special Education Principals and Leaders Association and is eager to provide a voice for country schools, their students and communities as an executive member.
Matt is a committed leader who aims to celebrate and build the capacity of his staff to shine a light on quality inclusive teaching practice across the Region. His school's journey of site improvement centers on the development of literacy, numeracy and expressive communication skills, integrated learning programs and opportunities for all students to be active participants and valued members of their communities.
Matt's teaching career began in Whyalla and Port Lincoln, having roles as an Aboriginal Education Teacher and School Counsellor before moving away to teach and become Director and Principal of Byron Community Primary School, a parent-run alternative primary school in the heart of Byron Bay NSW. He has since returned to the Eyre Peninsula with his family to work as a Coordinator at Port Lincoln Special School, a Regional Youth Development Coordinator for the Department for Education and as the Deputy Principal of Port Lincoln Primary School.
Matt strives to ensure students are valued for their unique skills and abilities and is passionate about his students being able to achieve genuine and meaningful school and life based learning outcomes via evidence based teaching practices.
